the Foundation of the Quebec Society for Hypertension (SQHA)

PASSION

PRESSURE

Blood pressure, like electrical voltage, is not visible. However, both exist and can be devastating.

It is not for nothing that we nickname hypertension the “silent killer”.

Although it is generally not accompanied by any symptom, it is partly responsible for nearly 30% of deaths in Canada.

Help prevent and control high blood pressure at all stages of life.

Today, the SQHA Foundation is reaching out to its institutional partners and community to help raise the $1.5 million , or $300,000 per year for 5 years, which will enable it to achieve its essential objectives of prevention, screening and improvement of hypertension control.

Prevention - Treatment - Training - Information - Research

For over 30 years, the Société québécoise d’hypertension artérielle (SQHA) has been committed to advancing knowledge in the field of hypertension to help healthcare professionals, patients and the general public prevent and control the disease.

Given the growing complexity of hypertension and its increasing prevalence at all ages, today, the SQHA is launching a fundraising campaign to support its training, information, research and development activities.
High blood pressure affects overall 20% of the Quebec population and more than 50% people aged 60 years and over.

A learned society serving Quebecers... and the entire French-speaking world

Founded in 1992, the SQHA brings together over 500 healthcare professionals, researchers and partners committed to the fight against hypertension and its associated risk factors. It contributes to research, the transfer of knowledge to healthcare professionals, patients and the general public, and the establishment of hypertension-related health policies in Quebec, in order to ensure excellence in care.

As a reference organization, the SQHA’s influence extends far beyond Quebec’s borders.

Its website attracts healthcare professionals and the general public from all over the French-speaking world in search of evidence-based, scientific information. In this way, the SQHA serves as a safeguard against the proliferation of misinformation on social media.

SQHA: unique in its specificity

The growing complexity of hypertension, diagnosed not only in adults and the elderly, but also in children, adolescents, pregnant and post-partum women, requires constant updating of scientific knowledge.

As such, SQHA is the only organization dedicated exclusively to the prevention and control of hypertension at all stages of life.
Over the years

In particular, SQHA has :

Awarded over $1.8 million in scholarships or prizes

to promising students and young researchers

Offered a comprehensive online training program

to frontline healthcare professionals

Published, in both languages, more than 60,000 therapeutic guides

for patient care as well as more than 800,000 leaflets and tools for patients and the general public

Reversing an appalling trend

For the first time in 20 years, the proportion of people treated for high blood pressure has fallen by 60%, while the proportion of people controlling it has dropped by 75%. Women suffer most from this deterioration. Hypertension is the main risk factor for stroke. It is also a major risk factor for coronary events such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure and limb artery disease.

It’s crucial to give SQHA the ammunition it needs to stop this silent killer.
